Natia Turnava: National Bank of Georgia Deepens Cooperation with Chinese Financial Institutions

During her visit to Basel, Switzerland, for the 95th annual meetings of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Natia Turnava, President of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), met with Pan Gongsheng, President of the People’s Bank of China, to discuss the progress of bilateral cooperation between the two central banks.

According to Turnava, the meeting focused on the implementation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that was signed earlier this year during the NBG delegation’s official visit to China.

"During our meeting with Pan Gongsheng in Basel, we exchanged information on the progress we’ve made under the memorandum signed between our banks. We are actively working with Chinese banks to increase their interest in the Georgian market,” Turnava stated.

She also highlighted that Georgia is preparing to welcome the President of CIPS, China's largest state payment system, in the coming days—an important step in expanding financial connectivity.

“There is clear progress in several areas, but there are also aspects where we hope for faster and more intensive support from our Chinese counterparts. This was also part of our discussion,” she added.

The MoU, signed in March 2025, aims to expand and strengthen bilateral cooperation in monetary policy, and includes information-sharing and collaboration in areas such as financial technologies, payment systems, and securities market development.
