Davit Songulashvili: Increasing Georgian Wheat Production and Preserving Indigenous Varieties Are Particularly Important

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Davit Songulashvili, accompanied by Ilia Jalaghania, State Representative in Kvemo Kartli, visited the agricultural operations of Lomtagora in Marneuli Municipality and met with wheat farmers.

Together with company representatives, the Minister toured the farmland and learned about ongoing work in wheat production and breeding, including the testing and development of Georgian wheat varieties.

“Increasing wheat production is particularly important, as is preserving and studying Georgian varieties and developing new ones suited to modern challenges. Today at Lomtagora, we have an opportunity to observe the ongoing work in wheat breeding and production. The experience and practices introduced by farms such as this are important for increasing domestic production and strengthening the competitiveness of Georgia’s agricultural sector.

“Our objective is to increase both the quantity and quality of products manufactured in the country, provide farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs with greater opportunities for development, and strengthen the country’s food security,” Davit Songulashvili said.

Wheat breeding and the testing of new varieties constitute one of Lomtagora’s main areas of activity. For this purpose, the company has conducted breeding and demonstration activities and tested modern agricultural technologies for many years.

Grain processing is also an important part of the company’s production activities. Its facility is equipped with stone mills and produces various types of flour from Georgian wheat and maize.

The Minister was accompanied at Lomtagora by Deputy Ministers Giorgi Tskrialashvili and Lasha Avaliani, Head of the National Food Agency Giorgi Iakobashvili, and Mayor of Marneuli Municipality Dauri Ismailov.
