Unexpected Georgian Moments on Famous TV Productions

Here is a compiled list of films and TV series, we’ve taken aback by bumping into Georgian culture.

Sherlock

One of our beloved British television series ”Sherlock” included Georgia in its crime drama. Following scenario can be found on episode 1st – ”The six Thatchers”, season 4th: Sherlock is on his investigation while is  distracted by a missing bust of Margaret Thatcher at the victim’s home, discovering that it was stolen and smashed upon the front porch. Four other identical busts are smashed and upon encountering and fighting the culprit, Sherlock discovers that the last bust contains a memory stick with information about Mary and her past as a government agent.

The culprit, a former teammate, seeks revenge in the belief that Mary betrayed him. Upon being questioned by Sherlock, Mary explains that she was part of a freelance task force named ‘A.G.R.A.’ All members had a memory stick containing data on each other, in the event that one was betrayed, detective story brings investigation to Tbilisi at the British embassy.

Nosferatu

Georgian folk song “Tsintskaro” performed by Hamlet Gonashvili, a famous Georgian singer and ensemble “Rustavi” was used in the soundtrack of a film ”Nosferatu: the Vampyre” from the German director Werner Herzog 1979 .

The movie is a remake of “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” an outstanding horror film directed by Friedrich Murnau.The new version of Nosferatu was declared a masterpiece of the horror movie genre by movie critics.

Genocidal Organ

Genocidal Organ  is the debut novel of Japanese science fiction writer Project Itoh turned into anime. When Sarajevo was destroyed by a homemade nuclear weapon, the leading democracies of the world transformed into surveillance states, while developing countries endured a multitude of genocides. Intelligence agent Clavis Shepherd must track down the man who seems to be responsible, American John Paul.

While these citizens continue to live in luxury, there is an interesting classification between Somalia and Georgia, referred as less wealthy nations, have become living hell embroiled in civil wars. The US, however, has identified the person responsible for instigating these wars – an American named John Paul, who on the surface acted as the cultural information minister for these countries and helped with their public relations. Watch for first 15 minutes to unexpected Georgian dialogue, letters and religious elements.

Wie is De Mol

One of the top rated television channel Avrotros aired 18th season of Dutch reality show ”Wie is Demol” recently, which has millions of viewers and 10 episodes of which were filmed in Georgia.

The program is about 10 candidates, who have to complete assignments by which they can earn money. However, one of the group members is the Mole. The Mole’s goal is to make the assignments fail and keep the amount of money earned as low as possible. The other candidates do not know who the Mole is, and need to unmask him or her.

La Belle Verte

La belle Verte is a 1996 French film written and directed by Coline Serreau.The “Green Planet” belongs to another solar system. Through the simplicity of their lifestyle those who live there are a real step ahead of us: they spend their time concentrating their knowledge, strength and energy on the development of their minds and bodies in a natural environment which they dearly preserve and care for.

Once a year, they gather in the crater of a dormant volcano to decide which planets they ought to send messengers to. There are volunteers for every planet except Earth, which is considered too polluted and too dangerous, while on this mission, watch closely (56:00) to listen to marvelous Georgian melody when characters meet Earth’s inhabitants.
