Georgian Amber Wine Presented at the Orange Glou Fair in the USA

To increase the awareness and promotion of Georgian amber wine in the U.S. market, the National Wine Agency, together with the American marketing company Colangelo & Partners, organized the participation of Georgia at the Orange Glou Fair, an international wine exhibition held in New York City. Up to 15 wines from eight Georgian wineries were presented, and the National Wine Agency was one of the event sponsors.

Seven countries participated in the Orange Glou Fair — Georgia, the USA, Austria, France, Hungary, Slovenia, and Germany. Around 40 companies presented approximately 150 wines.

The Orange Glou Fair, held annually since 2022, brings together producers of amber/orange wines from around the world. A special tasting of Georgian amber wine was also held during the event.

“Amber wine was first made in Georgia 8,000 years ago and was introduced to the rest of the world about 30 years ago by two Italian winemakers, Josko Gravner and Stanko Radikon, who wanted to study this style of winemaking. Today, several thousand winemakers produce amber wine alongside other styles,” the official Orange Glou Fair release stated.

Georgian amber wine, technically made with extended maceration on grape skins and chacha, has recently been added to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) list of special wines under the category “Long maceration wine on dourdou (chacha)”. Until now, the OIV list included only seven special wine categories: sparkling, aerated sparkling, fortified, liqueur, naturally sweet wines, ice wine, and wine aged under flor yeast. Georgian amber wine became the eighth.

During the same week, Georgian wine was showcased at two major New York events — the Orange Glou Fair and the Karakterre Natural Wine Festival — where thousands of wine professionals and consumers had the opportunity to taste Georgian wines.

The United States is one of the most strategic export markets for Georgian wine. Since 2013, targeted marketing campaigns supported by the National Wine Agency have significantly increased both awareness and export volumes. The U.S. is also one of the highest-value markets for Georgian wine, where the average export price reaches approximately 6 USD per liter, indicating strong demand and premium positioning.
