Nearly 900,000 People Visited Georgia’s Protected Areas in Eight Months as Agency Revenue Rose 48%

Approximately 900,000 people visited Georgia’s protected areas in the first eight months of 2026, according to the Agency of Protected Areas. Georgian citizens accounted for 41% of visitors, while international visitors made up the larger share.

Speaking at a presentation of the agency’s 2026 activities, Deputy Head Tamar Khakhishvili said the agency is developing ecotourism services alongside its work to protect biodiversity and patrol protected areas.

“In the past eight months, we have welcomed nearly 900,000 visitors to protected areas. Georgian visitors accounted for 41%, although we are seeing greater interest from international visitors,” Khakhishvili said.

She highlighted Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon and Mtirala National Park as destinations that are consistently among the most popular each year.

“As for revenue, based on figures for the past eight to nine months, we have exceeded last year’s level by 48%. The agency’s own revenue has therefore increased significantly compared with last year,” she added.
