Natia Turnava Meets IMF Deputy Managing Director Bo Li

As part of the 2026 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, President of the National Bank of Georgia, Natia Turnava, and Minister of Finance, Lasha Khutsishvili, held a meeting with IMF Deputy Managing Director, Bo Li.

The Georgian side briefed the IMF Deputy Managing Director on the country’s economic performance and development indicators. The discussion focused on measures taken to maintain a sustainable fiscal position and price stability. It was also emphasized that the recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are significantly increasing global uncertainty. In the medium term, inflation will largely depend on how geopolitical developments unfold and on the duration of ongoing regional conflicts.

It was noted that, to effectively address such challenges, it is important for the country to maintain sufficient buffers. In this context, special attention was given to the policy of accumulating international reserves, which is one of the key priorities of the National Bank of Georgia. As a result of this policy, the level of international reserves has exceeded the minimum adequacy threshold of 100%.

The parties also discussed the National Bank’s monetary policy and noted that future policy decisions will depend on the evolution of the current geopolitical environment.

For his part, IMF Deputy Managing Director Bo Li positively assessed the National Bank’s introduction of a scenario-based approach to monetary policy, which has gained particular importance amid the current geopolitical situation and economic challenges. This approach has strengthened monetary policy communication and made the risk management and decision-making process more transparent.

The meeting was also attended by Vice Presidents of the National Bank of Georgia — Ekaterine Mikabadze, Ekaterine Galdava, and Nino Jeladze; Deputy Ministers of Finance — Giorgi Kakauridze and Ekaterine Guntsadze; and Georgia’s Ambassador to the United States, Tamar Taliashvili.
