“Work to Improve Air Quality in Rustavi Must Continue Proactively” – Nino Tandilashvili
During a working meeting held to discuss air quality improvement in the city of Rustavi and the fulfillment of environmental obligations, participants reviewed the results of Rustavi’s Air Quality Management Plan (2023–2025), identified existing challenges, and discussed additional measures to reduce air pollution.
The meeting was attended by Nino Tandilashvili, First Deputy Minister of Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia; Nino Latsabidze, Mayor of Rustavi; and Irakli Shatakishvili, Member of Parliament representing Rustavi and Gardabani.
Participants placed particular emphasis on controlling emissions from industrial facilities and motor vehicles, inspection results, tightening sanctions, and improving the monitoring system.
“Efforts to improve air quality must continue proactively. Despite certain progress, planning additional initiatives is essential. This issue is a priority for the Ministry, and together with Rustavi City Hall, we are ready to take more ambitious steps jointly,” said Nino Tandilashvili.
The meeting outlined future measures, including increasing the number of inspections, proactive analysis of self-monitoring results with appropriate penalty enforcement, and stricter sanctions for exceeding emission limits. Plans also include the gradual implementation of the Law on Industrial Emissions, integrated environmental permits, and Best Available Techniques (BAT).
It was also announced that a green buffer zone will be created between Old Rustavi and the industrial zone, financed through the Environmental Responsibility Fund and local municipal resources. In addition, green coverage will be expanded in other areas of Rustavi.
“Rustavi needs a new wave—legislative changes, new approaches, and stricter control over industrial facilities. In conditions of economic growth, when enterprises are operating actively, new plans and steps are essential to improve the environmental situation,” said Mayor Nino Latsabidze.
The meeting, held at the Ministry, was also attended by Elene Ghubianuri, Head of the National Environmental Agency of Georgia; Levan Jgharkava, Head of the Environmental Supervision Department; Tamta Devdariani, Director of the Environmental Information and Education Center; as well as heads of relevant departments of the Ministry.
