“We Have Actively Started Work to Replace Existing Old Landfills with International-Standard Waste Disposal Facilities as Soon as Possible”
A regular working meeting was held in Akhaltsikhe, at the Administration of the State Representative, to discuss the selection of sites for the construction of new regional non-hazardous waste disposal facilities in the Samtskhe–Javakheti region.
The meeting was attended by Solomon Pavliashvili, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia; Zaal Gelashvili, State Representative in Samtskhe–Javakheti; Mikheil Gogolidze, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia; and heads of municipalities of the Samtskhe–Javakheti region.
It was noted at the meeting that existing old landfills across the country must be replaced with new regional non-hazardous waste disposal facilities and a network of waste transfer stations. As a result, solid waste management will be brought into compliance with international standards.
Georgia’s environmental policy covers all areas aimed at ensuring environmentally clean and healthy living conditions for people, as well as protecting nature and natural resources. One of the key components of this policy is solid waste management.
“Solid waste management is one of the most important challenges. The company responsible for this area has been integrated into the system of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture. We have actively started work to replace existing old landfills with international-standard waste disposal facilities in the shortest possible time. We are working actively and in a coordinated manner with all stakeholders, including regional and local authorities. I would also like to emphasize the importance of public involvement and support for new projects. As a result of establishing international-standard waste management facilities, groundwater, soil, and air will be maximally protected from pollution,” said Solomon Pavliashvili.
