Tender Announced for Final Section of Pshaveli-Abano-Omalo Road Rehabilitation
According to the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, an electronic tender has been announced for Lot II (km 21.5 – km 25.5) of the Pshaveli-Abano-Omalo road—a route of internal state importance.
This follows a decree of the Government of Georgia, and the tender marks the final step in a broader project that has been divided into eight lots. Contracts have already been signed and work is underway on seven of the eight sections. Upon completion of this tender process, all eight sections will be under contract, ensuring full-scale rehabilitation of the road.
The project is fully financed from the state budget of Georgia, with an estimated cost of 20,380,199.33 GEL allocated for Lot II. The scope of the project includes restoration of the road profile, construction of culverts, installation of water-retaining and artificial structures, improvement of road safety through technical regulation tools, widening of roadbed where feasible, and installation of bogiro (retaining) barriers to enhance traffic safety.
The Pshaveli-Abano-Omalo road serves as the only access route to Tusheti, starting in the village of Pshaveli in the Telavi Municipality and traversing the Abano Pass, which is situated at an altitude of 2,950 meters above sea level. Built in the 1960s–70s, this road is subject to severe terrain and harsh meteorological conditions, making it accessible for only 4 to 5 months each year.
This tender and the ongoing rehabilitation aim to significantly improve road safety, durability, and accessibility to the remote Tusheti region, which is vital for local communities, tourism, and emergency response capabilities.
