11th International Conference on Geology and Mining Held with Support from RMG
The 11th International Scientific-Practical Conference titled “Development of Mining and Geology as a Prerequisite for Economic Revival” was held with the support of RMG, one of Georgia’s leading mining companies.
Organized by the Mineralogical Society of Georgia, Georgian Technical University, Grigol Tsulukidze Mining Institute, and the Institute of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, the event brought together top experts from academia and the private sector to discuss current challenges and innovations in mining and geology. Among the scientific committee members was Joni Shubitidze, General Director of RMG. Company leaders, engineers, and technical specialists played an active role in both the organization of the conference and the presentations.
One of the highlights of the event was a presentation by Keti Benashvili, Head of the Geotechnical Department at RMG. Alongside her team, she addressed the relevance of geotechnical modeling in ensuring safe mining operations. “We chose to spotlight this topic because of its critical importance to the industry. At RMG, safety in mining is a top priority. My talk focused on how vital it is to source and analyze geotechnical information correctly to provide sound recommendations for ongoing production,” said Benashvili. She added that the presentation would also be valuable to students, as geotechnics remains a relatively new and complex field in Georgia, and events like this offer students valuable exposure to both international practices and local case studies.
The President of the Mineralogical Society of Georgia, Nodar Poporadze, highlighted the importance of creating a space for collective discussion and collaboration in the field. “We created the Mineralogical Society years ago with the goal of uniting geologists and mining professionals — whether from public or private sectors — to collectively discuss the field’s challenges and identify solutions. This conference is exactly that kind of platform. Every year, it draws international experts who are eager to exchange experiences and contribute to Georgia’s mining and geological advancement,” he stated.
Poporadze also emphasized RMG’s continued support over the years — both in logistics and content — enabling its specialists to present papers based on current company projects and fieldwork. This year, the conference featured 14 oral presentations and a dedicated poster session area, offering both formal and informal opportunities for discussion and knowledge-sharing among professionals, academics, and students alike.
